News - Sarachane Protests

The arrest of Istanbul's Mayor and the opposition presidential candidate Ekrem Imamoglu sparked nationwide, student-led protests in early 2025. Thousands of protesters, politicians and civil society figures were arrested in the following months. The demonstrations that started near Istanbul's City Hall at Sarachane were the biggest anti-government protests that took place in Turkey since the 2013 Gezi protests.
