Who is responsible
This website (rbadendieck.com) is run by Robert Badendieck, journalist, Berlin, Germany, who is responsible for the personal data described here (the "controller" under the GDPR). For any question or request about your data, email contact@rbadendieck.com. A postal address is available on request.
What is processed, and why
Visiting the website
When you open a page, your browser sends technical data such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is needed to deliver the page and to keep the site secure and working (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — the legitimate interest in running a secure website). It is not used to identify you.
Visitor statistics
The site counts visits with a privacy-friendly statistics service from its hosting provider. It uses no cookies, stores nothing on your device, does not build profiles and does not recognise you across visits or other websites. Only aggregated figures are shown — for example how many people viewed a page, from which country or website they arrived, which type of device they used, and how fast the page loaded (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — the legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used).
Contact form
If you send a message, the name, email address, optional subject and message you enter are stored and forwarded by email so the message can be read and answered (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR). Providing these details is voluntary, but without an email address there is no way to reply. They are never used for marketing, sold, or shared for advertising.
Embedded videos
Videos from external platforms load only when you click play. Until then, nothing is sent to the platform. Once you start a video, the platform receives data such as your IP address and may set its own cookies, under its own privacy policy (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR — your choice to play it; if you'd rather not, simply don't start the video).
Cookies
Visitors get no cookies from this site. The only cookies it sets are for the site owner's own sign-in to the admin area, which are strictly necessary for that.
Who receives the data
Data is processed on the controller's behalf by these categories of provider, each bound by its own data-protection terms:
- Hosting, content-delivery and security provider — serves the website and its files, protects it from abuse, and provides the anonymous visitor statistics.
- Database provider — stores the messages sent through the contact form and the site content.
- Email-delivery provider — sends the notification of a new contact message.
- Video platforms — only when you choose to play an embedded video (see below).
Some of these providers are based in, or process data in, the United States. Where that happens, the transfer is covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long it is kept
Contact messages are kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any follow-up, and are deleted within 12 months — or sooner if you ask. Technical logs are kept for a short period by the hosting provider and then removed. Visitor statistics contain no personal data.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, ask for its processing to be restricted, object to processing based on legitimate interests, and receive your data in a portable format. Where processing is based on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. To do any of this, email contact@rbadendieck.com. You can also complain to a data-protection supervisory authority, for example the one where you live or the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
No automated decision-making or profiling takes place.
Changes
This policy is updated when the site or its providers change. The date at the top shows the latest version.
